BOMBARDIER GLOBAL 5000

BOMBARDIER GLOBAL 5000

  • Passengers 13

Efficiency, speed and cabin comfort are the stand-out features of the Bombardier Global 5000. Based on the Bombardier Global Express, but with a reduction in cabin length, as well as a decreased range, the Global 5000 is still fully capable of journeys such as Paris to Chicago and London to Mumbai.

  • The Global 5000 was introduced in April of 2005 and upgraded three years later to increase performance and range. Over the years, the heavy jet has continued to increase in popularity.
  • With an ability to cope with shorter runways and steep approaches, the Global 5000’s versatility makes it an attractive choice for those who don’t regularly require the range of an XRS.
  • Its cabin is roomier than competitors Gulfstream G450 and the Dassault Falcon 900EX, with the widest cross section (just over eight feet at centerline), longest seating area (about 27 feet), and most headroom (six feet, three inches) in its class.
  • The cabin is also extremely quiet, with a sound level at cruise flight measured at 52 decibels.

The Bomabardier Global 5000 is renowned for its comfortable and luxurious interior, but also for its efficiency compared to some of its rivals, including the Global 6000. The aircraft is powered by two BMW/Rolls-Royce BR710 turbofans with FADEC and has a maximum range of 4,800 nautical miles (8,890 km).

However, since Bombardier introduced a modification to the refuelling system in 2007, the Global 5000 can fly for 4,800 nautical miles (8890 km). It has a top speed of Mach 0.89 (1,062 kph) and a typical cruise speed of Mach 0.85 (1,014 kph).

Interior design

The Bombardier Global 5000 is one of the most spacious and quietest aircraft in its class with every detail carefully designed to deliver the smoothest, refreshing and productive experience expected in a business jet. The cabin is 40 feet 9 inches (12.42m) in length, 6 feet 2 inches (1.88m) high and 7 feet 11 inches (2.4m) wide allowing ample space for the cabin to be configured to carry 16 passengers in comfort.

The main seating area has three sections which include a four-chair club seating section, a conference grouping on the left and credenza on the right in mid-cabin and a stateroom with two facing chairs on the left and a three-seater divan on the right. Some aircraft have been customised with three individual chairs in mid-cabin and/or two, three-seater divans aft.

The Global 5000 has a 195 ft (5.5 m) baggage compartment which can be safely accessed throughout the flight to retrieve personal items.

Technological features

Initially, Global 5000 aircraft were equipped with a six-screen Honeywell Primus 2000XP EFIS suite. This system was updated with flat-panel Rockwell Collins Fusion avionics from 2012. The unique combination of features such as the synthetic vision system on the head-up display (HUD) and the MultiScan weather radar enhances situational awareness at any time and in any weather. The ergonomics and aesthetics of this industry-leading flight deck provides pilots with outstanding comfort and control for a safer, more efficient flight experience.

History

Bombardier started to consider producing a long-range aircraft in the late 1980s and commenced development work on the Global Express family of business jet aircraft in the early 1990s. In October of 1991, the Global Express was announced at the NBAA convention and the programme launched in December 1993.

On the 13th of October 1996, the first prototype made its maiden flight. This aircraft was joined for the flight test programme by three additional aircraft and Canadian Type Certification was granted in July 1998 with European and US certification following shortly thereafter. The Bombardier Global Express entered service in July 1999.

The Global 5000 was announced on the 25th of October 2001, launched on the 5th February 2002 and the first aircraft flew on the 7th March 2003. It was introduced in April of 2005 and upgraded three years later to increase performance and range. Avionics were updated in 2012 and the current Bombardier Vision flight deck is business aviation’s most advanced avionics suite..

Manufacturer

With over 60,000 employees, Bombardier Inc. is a global leader in the transportation industry, creating innovative and original aircraft and trains. Its products and services provide world-class transportation experiences that set new standards in passenger comfort, energy efficiency, reliability and safety. Headquartered in Montreal, Canada, Bombardier has production and engineering sites in 25 countries across Transportation, Business Aircraft, Commercial Aircraft and Aerostructures and Engineering Services.

Bombardier Aviation, formally Bombardier Aerospace, designs, manufactures and supports innovative aviation products for the business, commercial and specialised aircraft markets and began with several acquisitions of already established aviation manufacturers and companies. First in line was the acquisition of Canadair in 1986 and, once the company's profitability was restored, Bombardier acquired Short Brothers aircraft manufacturing company based in Northern Ireland in 1989, followed closely by the acquisitions of the American company, Learjet, in 1990 and the Boeing subsidiary, De Havilland Aircraft of Canada, in 1992.

On the 24 of March 2011, Bombardier and Shanghai-based Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China Comac signed a framework agreement outlining long-term cooperation on commercial aircraft to try and make inroads into the domination of Airbus and Boeing in the market.

In October 2017, Bombardier and Airbus announced a partnership on the CSeries programme. Airbus acquired a 50.01% stake, Bombardier kept 31% and Investissement Qubec held 19%. However, on the 14th February 2020, Bombardier completed a strategic exit from the commercial aviation programme, transferring its remaining interest in the partnership to Airbus SE and Investissement Qubec.

On the 8th November 2018, Longview Aviation Capital Corp. acquired the Q400 programme and the de Havilland brand from Bombardier to add to the discontinued de Havilland Canada aircraft type certificates it bought in 2006. On 31 October 2019, Bombardier announced the sale of its aerostructures activities in Northern Ireland, Morocco and Dallas, to Spirit AeroSystems

Interesting facts

Although the cabin is significantly shorter than the larger Global Express, much of the space reduction comes from the crew rest and galley areas, meaning the passengers may not even notice the size difference.

  • The full-sized galley has room for a microwave, espresso machine and facilities for hot and cold food preparation.
  • Its takeoff range is impressively short given its size. When loaded to its maximum takeoff weight of 87,700 pounds, it can take off in only 5,000 feet and is able to climb to 43,000 feet in 23 minutes.

Cost

A new Bombardier Global 5000 costs around $50.44 million (2018). A pre-owned Bombardier Global 5000 is generally priced from $22 million.
