The most wonderful time of the year usually involves that stressful Christmas shopping spree when you buy gifts for your nearest and dearest. So, why not eliminate some of that pressure and do it in luxury?
We’ve put together a list of the world’s best luxury shopping destinations so you can do your Christmas shopping in style this year. Each accessible by private jet, you can include as many as you’d like on your spree and, because there’s no prohibitive luggage restrictions, you can truly shop until you drop.
Paris
Luxury shopping is synonymous with Paris. Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent, Hermès all call this historic city their home for good reason. The streets, the architecture, and even the cuisine exude sophisticated opulence, and combine to create the ultimate luxury shopping experience.
Paris isn’t all about big designer names either, there’s plenty of chic independent stores to choose from to give your gift an even greater air of exclusivity.
Wander down The Champs-Élysées and line your bags with everything designer, head down one of the quaint side-streets to add some boutique gifts to your Christmas collection or enter the Galeries Lafayette - one of the world’s most beautiful department stores. Wherever you choose to go, your shopping experience is always unforgettable in Paris.
New York
The Big Apple is at its majestic best during the holiday season. It’s hard not to get in the Christmas spirit as you walk along Fifth Avenue and browse at the display windows, or discover Rockefeller Centre with it’s timeless Herald Angels and world-famous Christmas tree.
Shopping on these streets at Christmas is an experience in itself. As well as renowned luxury brand stores, New York has an array of instantly recognisable department stores like Macys, Bloomingdales and Trinity Palace.
Shoppers can also spend hours wandering through Bergdorf Goodman or Barney’s before enjoying a fine-dining experience at one of Manhattan's famous eateries. When you’ve had enough, Teterboro, LaGuardia or John F. Kennedy airports are all close by to whisk you away to your next shopping destination.
Tokyo
If you’re after a truly unique shopping experience, then Tokyo is the answer. What makes this capital city different is that it’s like several neighbourhoods interwoven by a fantastic train and subway system. This means each district exudes its own unique charm and offers something different to would-be shoppers.
Ginza is Tokyo’s first Western-style shopping district, where you’ll discover the luxury boutique and department stores you’re familiar with. This area is the idyllic location to enjoy an afternoon of window shopping and browsing your favourite high-street shops.
If you want to experience the bold, colourful and cartoon-esq style Japan is famous for, then a trip to Harajuku will satisfy this craving. Or, for something more central, the Tokyo Station Area is crammed full of quirky retail stores, restaurants and electronic outlets.
Milan
Prada, Gucci, Moschino, Versace, Bulgari - Milan is the beating heart of the world’s fashion and a city that simply cannot be overlooked for a Christmas shopping spree.
Stroll through these stunningly beautiful streets and onto the Quadrilatero Della Moda - the fashion capital of this old city. Here, you’ll find Via Monte Napoleone, which is one of the most chic and expensive streets in the world, along with the aforementioned Champs-Élysées and Fifth Avenue.
If you want to shop out of the cold, head to Milan’s ‘drawing room’ - The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. This elegant nineteenth-century shopping arcade, covered by a beautiful glass and iron dome, brings together some of the most luxurious boutiques in Milan. The shops inside this grand structure mirror the classic Italian architecture that line the exterior streets. In December, festive lights and a large Christmas tree add to the magical shopping experience.
Dubai
Perhaps the world’s newest shopping destination, the city of Dubai is specifically built to do everything bigger and better - and this is what you’ll experience if you choose this city for your Christmas shop.
Dubai is the city of a thousand shopping centres, but the Dubai Mall dwarfs them all. Officially the biggest mall in the world at over 12 million square feet, there is almost every shop you could think of to satisfy your luxurious Christmas shopping itch.
Just west of the Dubai Mall lies the Souk, where you’ll find a plethora of different gold necklaces, jewel encrusted rings and diamonds for that special someone. If there’s time, and if you’re feeling adventurous, the historical Al Fahidi district is a must see with its fine display of art galleries, cafes and a bustling local Souk.
London
England’s capital becomes a whole new landmark at Christmas time. Making use of the short days this country has in December, London lights up over the festive period with thousands of Christmas lights and tinsel-covered Christmas trees. Here, you’ll find everything from independent fashion shops and world-famous department stores to luxury boutiques and Christmas markets.
Through the heart of this sprawling city lies Oxford Street, home to Selfridges, John Lewis and other household names. Shoppers flock here all year round, but over the winter months the street is lit up with spectacular Christmas lights.
A luxury shopping experience in London isn’t complete without paying a visit to Fortnum & Mason in Mayfair, or nearby Bond Street where you’ll discover high-end stores like Burberry, Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co.
For a quieter affair, Chelsea is the place to go, along with the luxury stores along the King’s Road. Stocked with all the latest fashion trends from around the world, enjoy the eclectic mix of trendy boutiques, designer shops, unique labels and trendy cafes and restaurants.
Finally, there’s the world-famous Harrods in Knightsbridge. At Christmas, this historic landmark sparkles with over 12,000 lightbulbs and large Christmas trees over the entrances. Lose yourself for the day amongst luxury lines, designer fashion and unique ornament pieces. Don’t forget the lavish department store Harvey Nichols is just a stone’s throw away for fashion, homewares and Christmas hampers.
