About the Met Gala

Formally called the Costume Institute Gala or Costume Institute Benefit, the Met Gala (or Met Ball) is an annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City.

Since its inception in 1948 by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert, the event has become "fashion's biggest night", with huge names in fashion, film, television, music, theatre, business, sports, social media and politics longing to receive a prestigious invite.

The Gala is held on the first Monday of May and celebrates the theme of that year's Costume Institute exhibition, which sets the tone for the formal attire of the night. Over time, the Met Gala has expanded beyond the New York fashion scene to become a global event.
